How can substitution and structure help us find an expression’s value?
To evaluate an expression, replace each variable with its given value and then simplify. Use parentheses around substituted negative numbers so their signs remain clear.
Follow the order of operations: grouping symbols; exponents; multiplication and division from left to right; addition and subtraction from left to right.
Worked example: Evaluate 3x² − 2y when x = −4 and y = 5. Substitute: 3(−4)² − 2(5). Exponent first: 3(16) − 10. Multiply: 48 − 10. Answer: 38.
For more than one variable, check every substitution before calculating. Evaluate 2a + 3b for a = 4 and b = −2: 2(4) + 3(−2) = 8 − 6 = 2.
Expressions can also represent formulas. If A = lw, then a rectangle with l = 8.5 and w = 3 has area A = 8.5(3) = 25.5 square units.
Common errors include ignoring exponents, performing addition before multiplication, losing a negative sign, or substituting a value for the wrong variable. A useful habit is to write the substituted expression on a separate line before simplifying.

Common Questions
What does evaluate mean? Find the numerical value of an expression.
Why put parentheses around a negative value? They show that the negative sign belongs to the substituted number.
Do I multiply before exponents? No. Evaluate exponents first.
What if two variables have the same value? Substitute that value separately for each variable.
Can an expression have different values? Yes. Its value may change when the variables change.
