How do defining attributes reveal relationships among geometric figures?
Geometry begins with point, line, and plane. A segment has two endpoints; a ray has one endpoint. Parallel lines never meet, while perpendicular lines meet at 90 degrees.
Angles are acute, right, obtuse, or straight. Complementary angles total 90 degrees and supplementary angles total 180 degrees. Vertical angles are congruent. When parallel lines are cut by a transversal, corresponding and alternate interior angles are congruent.
Classify triangles by sides (scalene, isosceles, equilateral) and by angles (acute, right, obtuse). Classify quadrilaterals by their properties. A square is also a rectangle, rhombus, and parallelogram because it satisfies each definition.
Use markings and definitions, not appearance, to justify a classification or relationship.

Worked Examples
Classify a square
It has four equal sides, four right angles, opposite sides parallel.
It is a square, rectangle, rhombus, parallelogram, and quadrilateral.
Compare vertical and adjacent angles
Vertical angles are congruent; adjacent angles share a side.
Use the relationship that matches the diagram.
Common Questions
Can one figure have several names? Yes; classifications are often nested.
Are vertical angles beside each other? No; they are opposite angles.
Do parallel lines need to look horizontal? No.
What makes a polygon regular? All sides and all angles are congruent.

Classifying only by appearance
Mark defining attributes before naming the figure.
Treating categories as mutually exclusive
Use the hierarchy: every square is also a rectangle and rhombus.
Assuming all intersecting lines are perpendicular
