How do center and variability work together to describe a data set?
Mean and median describe center; range, interquartile range, mean absolute deviation, variance, and standard deviation describe spread. The mean uses every value and is sensitive to outliers. The median and IQR are more resistant.
Choose statistics that match the distribution: mean and standard deviation for roughly symmetric data without strong outliers; median and IQR for skewed data or data with outliers.

Finding median before ordering
Sort first.
Reporting only the mean
Include spread and consider outliers and shape.

Guided Practice
For 2, 4, 4, 6: mean = 4 and median = 4.
For 3, 5, 8, 12: range = 9.
If Q1 = 6 and Q3 = 15, IQR = 9.
For skewed incomes, median is usually more representative than mean.
Adding a very large outlier usually increases both mean and spread.
